Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is getting 2 new maps, eventually

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare may be approaching its second anniversary, but Infinity Ward isn’t quite done releasing new maps for its latest Call of Duty entry. On Monday, the developer announced that it’s currently working on two more maps for the game, but it isn’t sure yet when they’ll be released.

The two new maps are Drainage and Al-Raab Airbase. Drainage takes place in a massive sewer runoff area, complete with dozens of concrete barricades and giant pipes that make up the map’s cover. Al-Raab Airbase is a bigger map that takes place on an airbase with several buildings that can be entered and lots of tight alleyways for fights.

While Infinity Ward’s announcement of these maps was a bit of a surprise, it didn’t come completely out of the blue. On March 31, both maps were stealthily released into Modern Warfare but were available for private matches only. However, as Infinity Ward noted in its recent tweet about the maps, they weren’t quite ready so they’ve been removed from the game for now.

The two new maps represent the first significant update to Modern Warfare since shortly after the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War at the end of last year. It’s unclear for now if the maps will be available in regular matchmaking playlists or if they’ll only be playable in private matches once they return to the game.
