No Man’s Sky Turns 10 With the Cosmos Update – Fly Into Stars, Run Space Stations, and Build Orbital Bases

Ten years. No Man’s Sky has been alive, breathing, and expanding for an entire decade, and Hello Games is marking the occasion with one of its most ambitious free updates yet. The Cosmos update drops a pile of new content into the space exploration game, from the ability to fly directly into a star system’s sun to taking over as the director of a space station and decorating it however you like.

You Can Now Fly Into the Sun – Literally

If you have ever looked at a distant star in No Man’s Sky and wondered what would happen if you just… kept flying toward it, the Cosmos update finally gives you an answer. According to the patch notes, stars in each system are now reachable via long-haul flight. Hello Games describes them as ‘burning spheres of plasma’ that are ‘bright, spectacular, but ultimately lethal.’ The patch notes add plainly: ‘Reach the sun at your own risk.’

That warning is about as clear as it gets. There is no suggestion that surviving the trip rewards you with anything beyond the satisfaction of having done it – or the fiery wreckage of your ship. Whether players will find a way to survive the heat or simply treat solar approaches as a spectacle is something the community will figure out quickly enough.

Become the Director of a Space Station

For players who prefer power over peril, the Cosmos update introduces the ability to take over as director of a space station. This is not just a cosmetic title. Players can redecorate both the interior and exterior of the station, turning what was previously a static trading hub into a personal base of operations or a social hangout for a group of friends.

Taking things further, the update also allows players to found a galactic alliance from the director’s chair. These alliances come with a customisable name and banner, giving organised groups of players a formal structure to rally around. Whether you run a tight-knit crew or a sprawling faction, the space station director role hands you the tools to build something that feels genuinely yours.

Deep-Space Outposts for the Solitary Explorer

Not everyone wants the responsibility of managing a station full of visitors. The Cosmos update also adds deep-space outposts – platform-based structures that float in the void of inhabited star systems. Some of these outposts already exist in the game world, manned by alien characters you can trade with. But you can also build one from scratch for yourself.

To construct your own orbital base, you need to deploy a deep-space base computer. Hello Games has stated that there is significant variety in what players can build if they are inclined toward interstellar roleplaying. This means a base that exists entirely off the surface of any planet and outside of any station – just floating among the stars, as self-contained as you want it to be.

More Content Packed Into Cosmos

The headline features are not the full picture. The Cosmos update also introduces a new star system map and derelict ships to salvage, with some of those wrecks described as being engulfed in biohazards. It adds another layer of risk and reward to exploration for players who enjoy the scavenging side of the game.

Hello Games boss Sean Murray addressed the scale of the update in a deep dive video, saying ‘It’s been a lot of work.’ He also pointed toward the studio’s next project, noting that ‘all of this is tech we get to test now, refine, and hopefully players will also experience on our other game, Light No Fire.’ Light No Fire does not currently have a release date.

Free for All Current Owners

The Cosmos update is available now at no additional cost for anyone who already owns No Man’s Sky. That has been Hello Games’ consistent approach across the game’s lifespan – major updates released for free, building on the foundation of a game that launched in 2016 to a very different reception than it enjoys today.

Gaming setup lit up to celebrate a milestone occasion

Ten years of updates have turned No Man’s Sky into something significantly different from what players first booted up in August 2016. The Cosmos update, with its solar flights, station ownership, and orbital construction, is another chapter in that story – and according to Murray, it may not be the last. He said in a separate interview that he feels like he could work on No Man’s Sky ‘forever,’ even while acknowledging that ‘there probably is some end date’ for it.
