Scott Pilgrim is coming back to theaters with updated Dolby release

Scott Pilgrim is battling his way back to the big screen. On Wednesday, Dolby Cinema and director Edgar Wright announced that the cult-classic Scott Pilgrim vs. The World will be returning to theaters to celebrate its (slightly late) tenth anniversary with a new version that’s been specifically “reimagined” for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World was designed for the big screen and for the best sound systems,” said Edgar Wright, the film’s director, producer and co-screenwriter. “To be able to see it with the best specs is obviously any filmmaker’s dream. You want people to see it as good as it could possibly be. I suspect that if you’re a fan of the movie, you’re going to get such a kick out of seeing it like this.”

The film’s new cut also came with a new trailer that leans into some of the film’s funniest and most quoted lines. The new trailer is also a great reminder that Scott Pilgrim’s cast was absolutely stacked with talent, and included two future Avengers.

While this is technically a new version of the movie, it seems that the changes mostly apply to the sound and image being optimized for Dolby technology. This new theatrical version of the movie will be released on April 30 for one week only, and only in Dolby Cinema theaters.

Thankfully, there seems to be some good news for anyone who can’t make it to the theater. According to Wright, posting on Twitter nearly a year ago, there are plans to release the long awaited 4K Blu-Ray of the movie after the Dolby Cinema release. Since the tweet was published in May 2020, it’s unclear if this is still the plan, or how long after this new theatrical release the Blu-Ray might arrive.

Update: On Twitter, Edgar Wright confirmed that a 4K UHD Blu-Ray release of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is on the way, but there’s no confirmed release date just yet.
